Two Ways To Warm Up This Winter

Written By: Erika Hazel aka The Bizerkely Vegan

Now that cold weather is upon us, its time to stay inside and stay warm! Or maybe you prefer a brisk walk in the cold weather with something in your to-go cup that keeps you warm! Two great options are herbal tea and hot cocoa. A recommendation? Hibiscus Citrus tea and homemade hot cocoa!

Hibiscus Citrus Tea

Hibiscus or Jamaica in Spanish (or Flor de Jamaica) is a tropical flower that is found in warm climates all around the world. Some of the health benefits of this wonderful flower include:

  • Antioxidants

  • Helps lower blood pressure

  • Hibiscus is high in polyphenols, which are compounds that have been shown to possess powerful anti-cancer properties

  • High in Vitamin C

You can find hibiscus at your local grocers like the Latinx markets or health food stores. When making a batch of tea, combine flavors like lemon, orange, ginger, or pomegranate. A few hibiscus leaves go a long way so in a pot of water you can combine some hibiscus flowers and orange rind and boil until the tea achieves a crimson/ruby red color. After turning off your heat source, squeeze in some lemon or juice and some sweetener. Agave syrup goes great with hibiscus tea! Serve hot or even chilled with ice! For an immunity boost, try grating some fresh ginger root or add in a teaspoon of ginger powder.

Homemade Hot Cocoa

Homemade hot cocoa is easier than you think and helps you to know exactly what ingredients are in your drink!

Using 1 cup of plant based milk or hot water in a small pot, add in the following:

  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder

  • Splash of vanilla extract

  • 1-2 tablespoons of sweetener

  • A pinch of salt

After you whisk together all the ingredients over low heat to your desired temperature, add in your favorites:

  • Mini marshmallows (try Dandies)

  • Candy canes

  • Whipped cream (try So Delicious Coco Whip)

  • Cinnamon sticks or nutmeg

Enjoy!
